In clinical studies papain, found in the papaya leaf, has proven to be a cancer fighting enzyme. The papain enzyme, which is found in both the papaya fruit and its leaves, is known for breaking up proteins. Enzymes are essential for health and longevity. The papaya leaf is also a source of riboflavin (vitamin B2), which is required for various cellular processes and plays a key role in energy metabolism. It is contains beta carotene, vitamin E, and potassium. In order for enzymes to work, they require good nutrition and vitamins. Sugar and alcohol can actually slow down or stop enzymes from working. Papain has also been used to improve digestion and to treat less serious digestion disorders such as bloating and chronic indigestion.
